What is a reverse mortgage — and is it right for you?

A reverse mortgage lets Canadian homeowners aged 55 and older access a portion of their home equity as tax-free cash — without selling, without moving, and without making monthly payments.

The loan is repaid only when the home is eventually sold. In the meantime, you keep full ownership of your home and the money is yours to use however you choose — to supplement retirement income, cover medical costs, help family, or simply live more comfortably.

Myth 1

"I'll lose my home."

Not true. You retain full ownership and title. The lender has no right to sell your home as long as you live there and maintain it.

"It's only for people in financial trouble."

Many of my clients are financially comfortable. They use it to avoid drawing down investments, help their children, or simply have more flexibility in retirement.

Myth 3

"The interest will eat everything."

Interest does compound, but so does your home value. Most clients end with significant equity remaining. We model this out together before you make any decision.

"My kids will inherit nothing."

In most cases, there is still meaningful equity left when the home is sold. I'll show you the numbers honestly, including best and worst case scenarios.
